How to get your business on Google Maps in Ireland (step by step)

When someone searches “barber near me” or “plumber Dungarvan”, the map results at the top get most of the calls. Getting into them is free. Here’s how to do it properly as an Irish small business.

Short answer: create a free Google Business Profile, verify it, fill in every field, add real photos, link your website, and ask happy customers for reviews. Google ranks map results on relevance, distance and prominence.

How Google decides who shows first

Google’s own help page on local ranking names three things:

You can’t move your shop, but you can control relevance and build prominence.

Step by step

  1. Create your profile at business.google.com with your exact business name — no extra keywords stuffed in.
  2. Pick the right main category (e.g. “Beauty salon”, “Plumber”), then add secondary ones that genuinely apply.
  3. Address or service area. If customers come to you, show your address. If you go to them, set service areas instead.
  4. Verify it. Google will ask for a video, phone or postcard check. Unverified profiles rarely show.
  5. Fill in everything: hours (including holiday hours), phone, website, services with prices, and a description written for humans.
  6. Add real photos of your work, your premises and your team — and keep adding them.
  7. Link a proper website. A site with a page for each service and your town in the text helps Google understand what you do.
  8. Ask for reviews using your review link, and reply to every one.
  9. Post updates — offers, new work, seasonal hours.

Reviews: the part most businesses skip

Reviews are a big part of prominence. The easiest way to get them is to ask at the right moment — straight after a job well done — with a direct link. Never buy or swap reviews; it breaks Google’s rules and can get your profile suspended.

Where your website fits in

Your profile gets you on the map; your website closes the sale. Every Nicell build includes on-page SEO, structured data and help setting up your Google Business Profile. See how to get found on Google and the prices.

If you’re a barbershop or a trade — two of the businesses that live or die on “near me” searches — see what that site looks like on the barber website and trades website pages.

Common questions

Is a Google Business Profile free?

Yes. Creating and managing a Google Business Profile is free.

How does Google rank businesses on Maps?

Google says local results are based mainly on relevance, distance and prominence. Reviews and a complete, verified profile help prominence.

Do I need a website to be on Google Maps?

No, but a website with a page for each service helps Google understand what you do and gives customers somewhere to go after they find you.
